10 Signs Your Company Needs an Enterprise Executive Coach

‘Enterprise Executive Coach’
10 Reasons Why You Should Consider Hiring One

For starters, what is an Enterprise Executive Coach and how is that different from an executive coach?

Having extensive experience and expertise in both, I believe I am fairly qualified to answer that question.

Here’s the short version: An executive coach focuses specifically on the leader, and in particular his/her behavior and leadership skills. An Enterprise Executive Coach, my personal passion and ‘sweet-spot,’ focuses on how the leader manages the entire enterprise, stakeholders and how he/she leads and empowers the team to deliver results.

To be clear, both are needed at the appropriate times but importantly, the roles and focus areas are very different.

Here’s 10 signs you might need an Enterprise Executive Coach to help out your team or company

  • There’s mis-alignment across the company. Ever hear the mantra, ‘we have trouble prioritizing our priorities?’ This often happens because each and every department has their list of priorities they need to get done. Put them all together and now you have 100 different priorities across the company. Sound familiar? Aligning on the company’s top 10 list is a lot harder than you
  • There’s lack of trust and transparency. I often say, ‘Everyone has good intentions. But when my agenda bucks up against your agenda, we un-intentionally create conflict among each other.’ And that’s when the lack of trust and transparency starts to build. Eventually, it boils over and conflict arises.
  • You’re not making any progress. Whether it’s on your strategies, vision, goals, mission, or whatever other important initiative, you seem to not be making any progress or movement. Sometimes you are just not able to see the ‘forest from the trees.’ That’s exactly when you need an outside jolt!
  • You are too close to the situation and/or people. Similar to #3, whether it’s because the project is ‘your baby’ or the person you need to hold accountable is your best friend or family member, there are scenarios where having an internal expert resolve your issue is just not going to work! It has nothing to do with how smart you are or the title you have. You are simply just too close to the scenario and need an outside expert to help
  • You are not sure if you have the ‘right people on the bus and in the right seats.’ Through our own experiences, evaluations and expertise, we all have a sense around talent management and how to build a high performing team and/or leader. Sometimes however, we have people in positions that we are not 100% sure on, whether due to culture fit, performance or overall leadership potential. An Enterprise Executive Coach can firmly validate or invalidate your call through his expertise in organizational dynamics, performance management, leadership and talent
  • You need to re-energize and/or get your team completely aligned on the company’s strategies and optimize your team. There are situations where an Enterprise Executive Coach can help optimize your team’s strategies and dynamics faster than you can, simply because he has the expertise to both facilitate the work session and converge your team. This also allows you, the leader to be a full participant and member of the team whereby facilitating the session yourself would take away from
  • You need to make sure integration and cohesiveness happens across the organization. Now you might be thinking, isn’t this HR and the business leaders’ job to make this happen? Yes and no. Yes, as true internal champions of the organization, both HR and business leaders own taking care of company and people. The Enterprise Executive Coach proves very useful as a partner, when working with cross-functional leaders and their teams, especially when convergence and alignment of strategies is not as simple as ‘one-two-three.’ He is seen as an objective, external facilitator with no agenda except to ensure the company and its’ leaders are moving in the same direction and ‘singing on the same ’
  • You need an external advisor/partner who understands both what makes organizations and its’ people successful. An Enterprise Executive Coach serves as a great sounding board for leaders of companies. He has the business acumen to understand your profit and growth strategies and at the same time, gets what it takes from a process, people and performance standpoint to actually get the work done. He doesn’t do the work for you or make your decisions. He simply serves as your sounding board and advisor when you get stuck. And let’s face it. We all get stuck at
  • You need to optimize how your leaders are leading both from the enterprise level and within their teams. An Enterprise Executive Coach understands that great leaders exhibit both great behavior and help drive great performance. This requires the ‘marriage’ between business and Sometimes, leaders run into their ‘ceiling’ of development. An Enterprise Executive Coach, having worked with people from mid-level management all the way to the board room, knows what it takes to be successful at every level of a company and can help get company leaders to their ‘maximum’ level.
  • You need an Enterprise Leadership partner who is external to your organization but vested in your success. You might say you already have this with your board, executive coach and/or mentor and advisor. Again, yes and no. Are these individuals engaged with your organization’s leaders and teams? On ‘a dime,’ can they come into your organization and facilitate and build your teams and leaders across the company? Effective Enterprise Executive Coaches can, because their sole focus is company and people success through the active engagement, facilitation and leadership with the company’s leadership. Like you, they are ‘in it to win it,’ both for company and for your success.
