Are you a Role Model?

Hello!

My name is Rubi Ho, founder of the Rubi Ho Group. I’m an Enterprise Executive Coach and Organizational Health and Leadership Consultant

My Mission is Simple, help people Thrive and Become their Highest Selves at Work and in life

First and foremost, A Happy Father’s Day to all you Fathers out there!

This week’s Leadership Challenge pertains to this question: Are you a role model for others?

Not having a father in my life, I was always looking for guidance from someone and until she passed away suddenly when I was 12, it was my mother who was that role model for me.

Have come from war torn Vietnam way back in 1975, my mom and my family had to start over. Because she didn’t speak English and didn’t have time to start her education over from scratch, my mom had to take on blue-collar jobs such as cleaning offices and schools. There wasn’t much else she could do given the language and learning barrier.

Whether she was intentional or not about being a role model, she consistently modeled to me four key things:

  • Having a whatever it takes and no complaining attitude around work
  • Having a high level of responsibility and sacrifice
  • Having a service to others mindset
  • Never giving up around things that truly matter: For her it was taking care of our family and providing a better future for her kids

I hope to be half the role model for others that my mom was for me.

The truth of the matter is that you are a role model for others whether you are being intentional about it or not.

The question is:  Who might be watching and trying to model after you and your actions?

Though we aren’t ever going to get it right all of the time, it is very helpful to feel like and even know someone is looking up to you, and in some respects even wants to be like you.

  • It could be your kids
  • Your friends
  • Your peers at work
  • Your teammates

Regardless, trying to be a positive role model for others is always a good thing, not only for others, but is beneficial for yourself.

So your Leadership challenge this week is three-fold:

  • Identify at least one person in your life who you know for certain sees you as a role model.
  • Determine the right behaviors, communication, mindset and actions that you want to model as it pertains to:
    1. The treatment of others
    2. Work in general
    3. The treatment of you, yourself And of course,
  • Work on it!

Have a great Father’s Day weekend and enjoy this week’s leadership challenge! Rubi, Founder, The Rubi Ho Group
