POST Covid 19: What Changes? What Stays the Same?

‘Back to Norm’ Preparation

Covid-19, regardless of where it originally came from, has stopped the globe in it’s tracks.  And even families for the matter.

Question is:  What changes?  What stays the same?

Unfortunately, I don’t have those answers for you.  That’s entirely up to you and your team to figure out in relation to work.  And to you and your family to figure out in relation to life in general.

I can however, provide you with some critical areas to think about and work through with both your home and work ‘teams.’

Appreciating the Positives at Home and at Work

Obviously, there have been both great benefits and downsides to being ‘locked down.’  More time with immediate family, the opportunity to reflect, breathe, slow down, and the ability to stay connected creatively but from ‘afar’ have been great pluses.

Pollution temporarily has cleared up in many parts of the world, we are seeing less ‘buy, buy, buy’ commercials thrown at us, and there is a ‘shared sense’ of ‘all in this together’ positive buzz in the air.

‘Essential workers’ feel blessed to be employed and more valued than ever, especially in the health field.  For businesses that still remain open, companies are learning how to remain productive and relevant, despite a ‘work from home’ work force.  Digital technology, efficient communication networks, systems and processes have never been more important and valued.

Being Valued and Validated; An Essential Need

Human beings crave connection to others and that doesn’t only mean with family.  Just to know that we are never alone and part of something greater than just ourselves is a necessary human condition.  Being valued and validated is not a desire but a need.  For millions of people around the globe, that need to be valued and validated, especially in terms of work, is completely null and void for the time being.

I don’t know when the globe will be ‘operational’ again.  Regardless however, there will be risks no matter how you look at it.  The reality though, is when in our world did we ever have any guarantees?  I argue never.

Now is the Time to Start Asking Yourself What Changes and What Stays the Same POST Co-vid 19

Below are some very ‘non-trivial’ questions that are critical to get answered with the important people in your ‘organization,’ whether it be at work or home.

At Work

  • Who goes back? Who can continue to work from home?
  • Does your Performance Management change?
  • Do we change how we measure success?
  • Logistically, do you still need all of your office/retail/commercial space?
  • How are meetings impacted?
  • What situations require being face to face/don’t require being face to face?
  • How did our technology, systems and processes hold up? What needs to change?
  • How did our customer service hold up?
  • Does our marketing change?
  • Does our business model still hold up? How about our strategies?
  • Do we need to redefine who we are?
  • Personally, is my role still relevant? Do I need to change/do something different?

At Home

  • What do we want to make sure and maintain, even after Covid-19?
  • Personally, what do I want to make sure and maintain, even after Covid-19?
  • What is really working at home during this lockdown?
  • What is really not working at home and what do we need to do to be better prepared for the future?
  • What do we need to focus on as a family so we are ready to ‘get back to normal’ once the lockdown is lifted?

It is now that you should start having your dialogue with your critical ‘team members’ both at work and at home.  None of the above questions are easy to answer but they are important that they do get answered.  The sustainability and ‘thrivability’ of your organization depend on it.

Blessings to you,
